[Navistor] Hi Larry - good to see you again
### Administrator has entered the room
[Navistor] Hello Brien
[Administrator] Hello
### Talainia has entered the room
[Administrator] I sent a reminder to 4,000 people this morning, so hopefully we will have some people to show up
[Navistor] Maybe they're trying to find the email
[Administrator] Maybe so.
[Navistor] Sounds like an email records management issue to me...ha
[Administrator] That's a very astute observation!
[Navistor] A bus driver once told me that the difference between a passenger and a pedestrian is about 2 minutes.
[Talainia] That's a good one
[Talainia] Did you learn that in Mexico??????
[Administrator]
I think that's the difference between a pedestrian and road kill
[Navistor] Actually on a bus ride back to Boston from San Antonio immediately after 9-11
### security_wink has entered the room
[Navistor] No planes were flying then..
[Administrator] That's a long haul
[Navistor] Brine, I think we shoud just start
[Navistor] Whoops sorry about the spelling
### security_wink is now gone
[Administrator] OK, we can start, just don't
call me Brine

[Talainia] What is email record management???
[Navistor] Email Records Management involves storage, retention magm't and searching
[security_wink] How are the records stored?
[Navistor] Requires same features as paper document
[Administrator] What do you mean?
[Navistor] Records are stored on disk or tape
[security_wink] Do you use RAID drives?
[Administrator] IS EAS used as the storage management system?
### rgaustad has entered the room
[Navistor] A module of EAS can be usec
[Navistor] Retention management and searching are key
[security_wink] What module?
[Talainia] I use RAID drives
[Navistor] StoRM - Storage and Retention Mangm't
[security_wink] What exactly does "retention management" mean?
[Navistor] Any storage works
[Navistor] RM specifies how long a specific document needs to be kept
[security_wink] Are records stored in real time?
[Talainia] Is there limited storage??
[Navistor] No limits on storage and records are achived in a procedure similar to backup
[Talainia] welcome rgaustad
[rgaustad] thanks
[Navistor] Exhange does not have good search or retention features
[Administrator] Exchange's search mechanisms are VERY outdated
[Navistor] People use email as a doc repository
[security_wink] How is your search feature better than the one that comes embedded on Exchange?
[Navistor] Many important docs are not even printed
[Navistor] Exchange doesn't allow attachment search
[security_wink] What do you mean not printed?
[Administrator] If you need to store a document, what is the advantage of using a system like yours over Microsoft's SharePoint?
[Talainia] what software does have good search and retention?
[Navistor] Sharepoint can be used an the indexxing engine
Navistor EAS uses either EAS Search (altavista) or Sharepoint to index
### rgaustad is now gone
[Navistor] Retention rules can be created with the formula editor
[security_wink] Can you give me an example of a retention rule?
[Navistor] If a document contains a keyword or is in a certain folder, keep it for seven years
[security_wink] Oh! Now I get it.
[security_wink] Oh! Now I get it.
[Talainia] Does it take the place of a backup??
[Navistor] Sarbanes Oxley and SEC are getting tough on companies
[security_wink] Do the records archive automatically?
[Navistor] No it does not replace backup but it can be used for faster restores
[Navistor] Yes, they do once the rule has been created
[Talainia] Awesome
Administrator how does the software go about speeding up restores?
[security_wink] It sounds like by using EAS that you can be sure that you never lose any email. Am I understanding that correctly?
[Navistor] You can restore lost messages straight from document store to the mailbox
[Navistor] Yes, you are correct in not
losing any mail
[Administrator] Is that just a simple drag
and drop operation?
[Navistor] Not drop and drag, but click of a mouse
[Talainia] how long does the restore take
[Administrator] Almost the same difference
[Navistor] a few seconds
[security_wink] Can you tell us about some of the other interesting features?
[Navistor] Makes Exchange messages stores small
[Administrator] What types of search criteria can you use when looking
for a message that's buried deep within the archives?
[Navistor] Automates company's document retention policy
[security_wink] Does it compress image files?
[Navistor] Keyword search goes across entire
archive if you have permissions
[Talainia] Do you need to worry about viruses being archived??
[Navistor] compresses 2 to 1 and eliminates duplicates across entire Exch Org
[Administrator] Yes, but can you also cross index the search by date, recipient, etc. ?
[Navistor] You should run antivirus before you archive, but messages are safe once in the archive
[Administrator] That's good to know. What anti virus software do you generally recommend (if any)?
[Navistor] Yes indexing is across all parameters of the message
[Talainia] How does liscensing work?
[Navistor] Hauri product seems to be pretty strong these days
(http://www.hauriusa.net)
### Joda has entered the room
[security_wink] How does it handle encrypted messages?
[security_wink] Hi Joda
[Talainia] welcome Joda
[Administrator] Hello Joda!!!
[Navistor] treats them like any other message. EAS runs off Exchange security
### kman has entered the room
[Administrator] So how does the product's licensing work?
[security_wink] How do you make sure that unauthorized users will not be able to retrieve my confidential email?
[Administrator] Hello KMAN!
[Talainia] welcome kman
[kman] Sorry I'm late
[Navistor] Have to have Exch profile to access a message
[security_wink] You are in trouble for being late.
[Navistor] Master license plus CALs for the clients
[Administrator]
Easy now!
[Administrator] Does the master license cover multiple Exchange servers?
[Navistor] KMAN is tough, he can handle it
[kman] In that case, I'll sign up for 1,000 additional CALs for EAS
[security_wink] (I was just kidding.

[Navistor] Yes, EAS doesn't care how many Exch servers there are as long as they are under the same Org Name
[Administrator] Sounds like a sale to me Richard ;)
### gchandler has entered the room
[Talainia] welcome gchandler
[Administrator] Hello gchandler
[security_wink] What are the hardware requirements for EAS?
[Navistor] Normal Intel hardware that you probably already have
[Talainia] are there ways of joining multiple organizations?
[Administrator] Of course I'm sure that EAS performs better if you have fast RAID arrays and insane amounts of memory right?
[Navistor] Must be single Org per EAS server
[Navistor] Any Windows server app does
[security_wink] Can you explain about the corruption problem that occurs with .pst files? I have heard the EAS eliminates that.
[Administrator] How is everyone else in the room handling document indexing and archiving right now?
[security_wink] You wouldn't want to know how badly we are handling document archiving...
[Navistor] EAS can migrate the pst's to the central archive and leave a small shortcut behind which keeps the pst files small
[Navistor] EAS can also migrate the pst folder structure back into the mailbox
[security_wink] Can EAS archive public folders?
[Administrator] Can EAS index distributed PST's
[Navistor] You keep the mailbox small by archiving against it
[Navistor] Yes to public folders which can also be indexed and searched
[Navistor] Yes to distributed pst's
[Talainia] how does it work with sharepoint:?:
[Navistor] Exchange is much nicer to backup and restore when it is small.
[Navistor] Sharepoint is used strictly for the indexing engine portion
[security_wink] How hard is it to deploy the EAS snap-in with Active Directory?
[Navistor] Very easy on the snap-in because there are no schema changes required
[Administrator] Could you use the same SharePoint server to index the EAS archives and the normal SharePoint document library at the same time?
[Navistor] Not all that familar with SharePoint's other functions
[Talainia] how easy is it to hack a EAS server}
[Navistor] Nothing really to hack that I know of
[security_wink] What sort of customizable reports can EAS generate?
[Administrator] Does EAS get installed on the same box as Exchange?

Talainia not sure what happened????
[Navistor] Strange
### security_wink has entered the room
### Joda is now gone
[kman] It must have been Exchange and not EAS.
[Navistor] Maybe we got hacked..
[Talainia] so where did we leave off?
[Navistor] Nothing goes on Exchange
[security_wink] I was temporarily disconnected from the chat room...
[Navistor] EAS talks to Exchange thru a mailbox
[Navistor] One mailbox on the GAL with admin permissions
[Talainia] Brien has been kicked out of his own chat:SMOKE:
[Navistor] justice prevails....
[security_wink] You might have already answered this when I was disconnected, but I was wondering what sort of reports EAS could generate
[Navistor] EAS generates estimates for rule impact before you run the rule for real
[security_wink] That is a nice feature.

[Talainia] are the reports web based?
[Navistor] No, but they are available to the admin thru his/her view
[security_wink] Can you set quotas for users?
[Navistor] Quotas are set on Exchange, but we can keep the users from approaching their limit
[Talainia] how is that done?
[Navistor] Set a rule like achive everything over 30 days and 5KB
[security_wink] Is there anyway to filter out spam?
[Talainia] Brien called, he says hello:
[Navistor] EAS only archives what it is told to archive so you have some controls based on content
[Navistor] Tell Brien we miss him
[security_wink] Can you say, "Don't archive anything that says 'to unsubscribe click here' ?"
[Navistor] Yes you can
[security_wink] Then you can in fact filter spam...
[security_wink]
[Talainia] does it support content filtering?? I don't want to archive the joke of the day.
[Navistor] well maybe some...
[Navistor] It might be better to specify what you want to keep by folder filtering first
[Navistor] I think we're done
[security_wink] Can you tell it not to archive folders that are named 'jokes' ?
[Talainia] is this a one person job:
### Brien has entered the room
[Navistor] yes you can tell it not to achive any folder and it can be done by one person
[security_wink] welcome back

[Navistor] Hey Brien..
[Brien] Hello everyone... Brien has entered
the room!
[Talainia] RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[Navistor] Only the good guys get knocked off
[Brien] Sorry about the crash. I think that my ISP is running some sort of bandwidth monitor
[security_wink] I really enjoyed learning about EAS. Thanks.
[Navistor] Thats what it looked like.
[Brien] I will call them after the chat to make sure that this doesn't happen again.
[Navistor] Thanks to all for your participation
### Navistor is now gone
[security_wink] I am off to a meeting now. So long.
[Talainia] Sounds like EAS can be a time saver.

[Brien] So I get back in and everyone
leaves. I see how it is
